When I was at SAM Camp this summer I sold two more guitars and received orders for two more - I guess I am officially building instruments again. One of the guitars sold is now in Maryland from Washington state. Its new owner was kind enough to make a quick recording after receiving it just yesterday.

Michael, wonderful piece of music performed on a wonderful sounding guitar! Congratulations!
Please give us some information about the guitar: woods you used, measurements, bracing, finish?
Juergen

Juergen,

Thanks!

It’s Sitka over Oregon Myrtle. It’s a Multi-scale 26” over 25”. The dimension are based on a Martin OM though it is shaped nothing like, need to be able to buy a stock case. The bracing is a double X design. The finish is EM6000 over Silvertip epoxy.

Tschüss Michael

That was so nice to come home too after a short holiday, thanks Steve.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Beautiful. Neck wood? Or neck wood treatment -- stain? I really like the contrast with the body.

Brian,

It’s two treatments of concentrated black tea and iron acetate made with white vinegar and washed 0000 steel wool. Use the very corner of a foam brush to apply the tea, then follow with the steel wool mixture. The finish is Silvertip epoxy under EM6K. The neck is Sapele. Pro-tip - seal any light wood purfling before ebonizing. I use thin CA on a Q-tip, taking care to not get any CA on the wood you intend to darken.

M
